After some questions arose last week, as to whether or not President Trump was eliminating the Citizenship question on the 2020 US Census, he quickly laid those doubts to rest! In fact, on Wednesday, he said that his Administration was “absolutely moving forward” with plans to add a question regarding citizenship to the 2020 census, making clear that the statements to the contrary from administration officials were false!

He wrote…

“The News Reports about the Department of Commerce dropping its quest to put the Citizenship Question on the Census is incorrect or, to state it differently, FAKE!” President Trump wrote on Twitter. “We are absolutely moving forward, as we must, because of the importance of the answer to this question.”

The uproar began when the U.S. Census Bureau began the process of printing the questionnaire without the question, as the Trump Administrations Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross stated that while he respected the Supreme Court’s decision, he strongly disagreed with it. Still, he said that they were printing the Census without the question included!

He stated that…

“The Census Bureau has started the process of printing the decennial questionnaires without the question. My focus, and that of the Bureau and the entire Department is to conduct a complete and accurate census.”

Americans who were in favor of the question of American citizenship being included on the Census were outraged, as President Donald Trump had previously stated after the Supreme Court’s decision, that he would ask his attorneys about possibly delaying next spring’s decennial census until the Supreme Court could revisit the matter.

However, the outrage was short-lived, as President Trump put any questions of validity to rest when he stated…

A very sad time for America when the Supreme Court of the United States won’t allow a question of ‘Is this person a Citizen of the United States?’ to be asked on the #2020 Census! Going on for a long time.”

Then, the President added…

“I have asked the Department of Commerce and the Department of Justice to do whatever is necessary to bring this most vital of questions, and this very important case, to a successful conclusion. USA! USA! USA!”

The Supreme Court ruled in a 5 to 4 Decision, along Party lines, with swing vote Roberts siding with the liberals! Interestingly, Roberts even admitted that the question was legal, but then added that the Trump Administration adding the question to help enforce the Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters’ access to the ballot box.  However, in the Supreme Court’s decision, Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s four more liberal members in sending the case back down to the lower courts by saying the administration’s current justification for the question…

“seems to have been contrived.”

In other words, Chief Justice Roberts agrees that the question is permissible under the Constitution, as it has been countless years before, but he alleges that President Trump’s implementation of the question seems created or arranged in a way that appears artificial and unrealistic. However, THAT IS NOT THE JOB OF THE SUPREME COURT! In fact, the job of the Supreme Court is to ensure that the Constitution is being followed, not to determine the reasoning or justification for doing any such actions!

Therefore, since Chief Justice Roberts employed ‘Judicial Activism’, President Trump fired off a tweet, where he said…

“The News Reports about the Department of Commerce dropping its quest to put the Citizenship Question on the Census is incorrect or, to state it differently, FAKE! We are absolutely moving forward, as we must, because of the importance of the answer to this question!”

Interestingly, his tweet alone, prompted two federal judges to convene emergency hearings, when the Justice Department told a federal judge in Maryland that it has been…

“instructed to examine whether there is a path forward consistent with the Supreme Court’s decision, that would allow us to include the citizenship question on the census.”

The Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division instructed the judge to find a “viable path”, and that they would seek out “instructions to simplify and expedite the remaining litigation and provide clarity to the process going forward,” from the Supreme Court!

In addition, reports indicate that President Trump has indicated that he could issue an executive order, to place the question, asking if the individual is an American citizen, onto the Census, but we have yet to obtain official confirmation, as the factual nature of that claim!

THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY…
