On Thursday night, the House of Representatives and the Senate approved a border security package that averts a second government shutdown. It was unusually passed in the Senate first by a vote of 83 to 16 vote, and then sent quickly to the House, where it was also passed by a 300 to 128 vote! The House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) said…
“We were bargaining for 70 [GOP] votes, and we came up with 87.”
However, the bill only funds approximately 55 miles of border wall or barrier, at a cost of $1.3 Billion. The President signed the bill, and then announced that he would be signing a declaration of national emergency to fully secure the border!
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) responded by warning the President that if he declares a national emergency to secure the border, they will be also utilizing it to attack the 2nd Amendment and take away Americans guns. Pelosi said…
“A Democratic president can declare emergencies, as well. So the precedent that the president is setting here is something that should be met with great unease and dismay by the Republicans. Let’s talk about today: The one-year anniversary of another manifestation of the epidemic of gun violence in America. That’s a national emergency. Why don’t you declare that emergency, Mr. President? I wish you would. But a Democratic president can do that.”
Meanwhile, other Democrats threatened to not only join Pelosi in going after Americans right to bear arms but also using it to force environmental socialism on Americans as well! Some have even called for the tearing down of existing border walls and barriers, like Beto O’Roarke (D-TX), and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
Some pro-Trump supporters and conservatives are concerned that the bill has major caveats hidden throughout the legislation, but White House officials have tried to tamp down those concerns, as they spent hours on the phone with members of the Conservative media, pushing the merits of the bill. However, the bill passed with a veto-proof two-thirds margin in both chambers. Therefore, the President signed it in an “enrollment ceremony”!
However, in addition to the funding bill, which short-changes the President’s border wall promise, the White House simultaneously signed a national emergency declaration, that is designed to secure the border! In addition, the President and his Administration have also freed up $8 Billion in funding to build the border wall!
In fact, on Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson Tonight, where the guest host Brian Kilmeade announced… (Transcript via The Daily Caller)
“I just got off the phone with Mick Mulvaney, chief of staff, and the answer is a resounding ‘Yes.’ Now for the first time, you will hear how much it is and where the money is coming from.
It’s going to be about $8 billion. He had the $1.3, then $600 million will come from the Treasury, the Treasury forfeiture front. $2.5 billion out of DoD. They consulted with Mick Mulvaney and the White House over the last few months on what they could actually do and they are going to use some money they feel they can spare on the drug interdiction account,” he continued. “Then they came across with $3.5 billion for the military, the military construction budget.”
Now, Congress believes President Trump as $21 billion in unobligated military construction funding money available for the border wall with Mexico in addition to the $8 Billion allegedly secured. In fact, Foreign Policy reported…
The announcement Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to declare a national emergency over the southern border is very likely to rope in the Pentagon, as the White House seeks to divert military funds to build his long-promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Congress believes the Pentagon has $21 billion in unobligated military construction funding—money that has been appropriated by the legislature and set aside for specific projects but not yet issued—that the president could use to build the wall over objections from Congress, according to two congressional aides.
