The American Flag has been a symbol of pride and American values since the dawn of our country. It symbolizes much more than a piece of cloth to our military, veterans, and citizens nationwide. It is a symbol of freedom, a symbol that should be respected and honored. Unfortunately, over the past year, America has become victim of a spreading and ever-growing cancer that took root in our Professional Sports, which has spread to even Nike, as the cancer spreads to erode the very fabric of our nation. To understand the significance of the American Flag and our National Anthem, you have to know the history of both.
It was a rainy day on September 13, 1814 when British warships rained fire and fury onto American Patriots at Fort McHenry in Baltimore’s Harbor. A 35-year-old American lawyer named Francis Scott Key’s was aboard the flagship of the British fleet on the Chesapeake Bay in hopes of persuading the British to release a friend who was recently arrested. Keys and his friend were both held prisoner due to the fact that they knew of the impending attack that had already ensued. The Battle was known as the ‘Battle of Baltimore’, and followed the attack where the British burned the Capitol, the Treasury, and the President’s Home. It was another day in the ongoing War of 1812. Keys described the attack by saying that “It seemed as though mother earth had opened up and was vomiting shot and shell in a sheet of fire and brimstone.” But when darkness arrived, Key saw only red erupting in the night sky. Due to the scale of the attack, Key was certain that the British won, but as the “dawns early light” peered through the fading smoke, he saw the American Flag, and not the British Union Jack flying over the fort. Francis Scott Key’s wrote his thoughts of the attack on paper while on board the ship to the tune of a popular English song. His brother-in-law, commander of a militia at Fort McHenry, read and distributed it under the name “Defence of Fort McHenry.” Soon after that, the Baltimore Patriot newspaper printed it, and within weeks, Key’s poem spread across the country and became known as ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’
Over the years, the American Flag has endured wars, and been the target of enemies both foreign and domestic. The American Flag is a symbol that harbors vast meaning for our Country, and Military. For example, the flag’s stripes represent the 13 Colonies that fought what seemed to be an impossible war with the British. Those were the same Colonies that bled and died for the right’s and freedom’s that we have been fortunate enough to enjoy over the years. The stars represent the 50 States of the American Union. A symbol of the Unity of our Country from coast to coast that had over 620,000 souls perish fighting to preserve that Union during the Civil War. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: The red stripes symbolize hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and the blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. All of which, have significant meaning for our Military Forces, and Veterans. Million’s of American’s have given their lives carrying the American Flag as a symbol of our nation’s commitment to not only protecting Americans rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but to fight for other’s rights to those sacred human desires.
Therefore, as the NFL and Progressives embrace their constitutional right to take a knee during the National Anthem, they diminish the sacrifice that our men and women in uniform have made to grant us those very same constitutional rights to those protesters. Sadly, there have been so many who have died to protect the freedom’s that our flag symbolizes, therefore, just because a bunch of over-privileged, over-paid millionaires who can throw a football around have the right to take a knee to protest, it doesn’t mean that they should. Many within our nation have chosen to embrace dishonoring our nations flag, and all that it stands for, but in that moment of so-called protest, they disrespect the firemen who died and hoisted the flag at Ground Zero. They disrespect the Marines who placed the flag upon the mount so long ago! They disrespect the men and women who fought and died to give birth to our great nation. They disrespect the many American soldiers who come home in coffins. Coffins draped with the very American Flag that the NFL vehemently hates and disrespect.
Too many have fought and died for this country and for what the flag represents to have them dishonor it and disrespect it. It is not simply a piece of cloth to many in America, because it is a symbol of what our nation is, and what our nation stands for. So why is there so many willing to show such disrespect? To start with, our nation has slowly moved away from educating our children about history. When we do that, history tends to repeat itself. This is why we have so many of our youth claiming to embrace communism, despite the fact that communist nations of the past snuffed out freedoms, forced their citizens into poverty, and exterminated millions of their people in the name of justice. American’s have also chosen to abandon God’s laws. They have minimized the family unit, glamorize sex, and promoted greed. Progressive’s have pitted men against women, black against white, legal citizen against illegal alien, and used greed to promote class warfare. We have abandoned God’s principles, but it is not too late. We need to defy those who fight to diminish our flag, our soldiers, our veteran’s, and our nation. We need to educate our children about the history of our great nation, and the history of the world. But most importantly, we need to educate our children about God and his teachings. It is then, and only then, that we will be able to protect and preserve our nation for ourselves and our posterity.
Fortunately, there is hope arising within our nation, in the midst of our nation grappling with ‘political hate and turmoil’. One such incident of hope arose in at an elementary school, as a group of elementary school boys were caught embracing the vast importance of respecting our nations flag, and in a way that only a child could accomplish. KHQ Channel 6 reported…
Viewer Amanda witnessed this outside Hayden Meadows Elementary School, and said the following:
“Wow! I just watched the most amazing act of Patriotism! Was waiting to pick up my children from school when three boys took down the flag. They were having a hard time making sure it didn’t touch the ground when the third boy laid under it to honor not letting it touch the ground!”

In all, the NFL, Nike, and the progressive ‘resistance’ could learn a lesson from these three honorable boys who accomplished more than taking down the flag at the end of the school day. Without knowing it, they showed the true meaning of what it is to be an ‘American’. They showed respect for a flag that is more than just a piece of cloth. It is a symbol of American’s dreams, liberties, pride, and respect. They showed that when our children are taught about the history of our nation, and all of her glorious traditions, symbols, and history, our nations youth can and will demonstrate respect, pride, and honor. Traits that all Americans, both old and young should strive for!
